Re: Major Nelson Getting Hacked, Internet

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I read about this story a couple of days ago, and was appalled at the number of people who talked him down, laughing and generally disrespecting the man.

I dunno what to say other than, are you guys idiots?

Potential DIY Racing Cockpit…?

Looks pretty interesting. If I have time, I might make an attempt, but I’d have to see how much PVC tubes and fittings would cost me. It’s certainly more daunting than trying to assemble a model kit.

Harvard: Canada’s Internet Sucks

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Word:

The 232-page study, commissioned by American regulators and released Wednesday evening, found that Canada rates poorly compared to peer countries when measures such as national broadband adoption, network capacity and prices are taken into account.

Funny, a week ago, there was an ISP-funded report saying otherwise:

The report, commissioned by Bell, Bell Aliant, Rogers, Cogeco, Telus, Shaw and SaskTel and prepared by telecommunications consultant Mark Goldberg, found that Canadians are well served in broadband, contrary to the findings of other international reports.

Lost Planet 2 Gamerip

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I took the time to rip the audio from the game, now it’s available for your listening:

Sendspace
Megaupload

This was done by feeding an optical audio cable into my Hauppauge HD PVR, which is then fed straight into my computer. As a result I get Dolby Digital 5.1 AC3 audio, which is as clean as it gets, short of extracting the game assets and converting it like that. Though upon examining the stream, it turns out the audio is 2-ch, with the back channels being nothing more than reverb. So the above files are only 2-ch AAC 192 kbps VBR audio, but enjoy!

P.S. I also normalized the audio tracks and did a bit of cleaning up with the Main Menu track to ensure it sounded great as a standalone track, but overall should be pretty much the same thing.

CRTC Dissolution Petition

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

http://dissolvethecrtc.ca/node/1

Looks like this was created over the CRTC ruling that Bell can now charge all customers $0.75 per GB when they’re over 300 GB. This also includes customers classified under wholesale.

Liberals Make Net Neutrality Statement

Though whether they actually follow up on this is another story. I gave my votes anyway, and will add more if I’m allowed them. That said, I wish they would actually do something, not just talk and turn it into some election issue only to be forgotten…

Also give a read to Internet Infrastructure Investment?, as that’s good.

This Must Be Illegal

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/07/31/tech-bell.html

Bell Canada Inc. is moving to impose download limits on customers of independent internet providers… The limits would range from two gigabytes per month for customers with slower connections of 512 kilobits per second up to 60 GB for those with the faster speeds of five megabits per second…

Seriously. You do it to your own customers, then whatever. Now you want to do this to the reseller ISPs too? You already have another case that is to be ruled on by the CRTC; this isn’t making your case any better than it should be, especially since Google is against you.

Bell Traffic Shapes Everyone

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Not just their customers, but the reseller ISPs now, and I’m under one of those reseller ISPs.

Bell claims they’re only slowing down torrents, but it’s also affecting network latency in Mabinogi, too! You tell me if I’m happy with that!

I hope the CRTC takes the matter seriously and does something that’ll let everyone be happy. Or just make Bell suffer and we win (zero-sum game). Don’t care which, just let me play my games in peace!

I’m nowhere near Ottawa, but a rally is being held there April 29, so if you’re around, please show your support!

ICBM on eBay

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Couple of things to note:

  1. This thing has been listed since July 15, so if it were bullshit or illegal, eBay or the USA respectively would have picked up on this.
  2. $1.5 million USD. US dollars. Holy crap.
  3. No nukes included.
